The man who’d been the love of her life had been seeing several women on the side and to support his ‘hobby’ he’d been taking out loans for years.

Those long distance trips which supposedly had been for ranch business had instead involved gambling as her uncle had attempted to win money so that he could buy his way out of trouble.

The situation was even more painful because the ranch had been in her aunt’s family for generations. After her marriage, Rose had drifted into becoming too involved in running the operation, giving Karen’s uncle the responsibility of the finances.

After the call from the bank Aunt Rose had wasted no time in leaving town – forcing Karen to go with her after making quick arrangements for her uncle’s burial.

Karen had begged to call Hawk, but Rose refused. She assured her that what they had was nothing more than a boy-girl crush and she’d get over it – that in her books, men weren’t work the earth they walked on.

But Karen was fully aware of the reasoning behind her aunt’s harsh decision. She’d been humiliated, embarrassed – and she didn’t want the town gossip-mill to get wind of such.

Karen tried to convince her that Hawk wouldn’t say a word to anyone about the loss of the ranch – about her uncle’s infidelity, but Rose wasn’t in any mood to listen. And because Karen wasn’t of legal age, there was little that she could do other than going with her aunt.

With little money, Rose had taken them as far as possible. They had worked their way upwards to New York doing odd jobs along the way.

At some point, Karen had managed to graduate – with very low marks. She felt crushed, longing for Hawk, unable to concentrate or focus on life. She’d been so cocooned in her grief that she hadn’t even been able to console her aunt – who she knew was still reeling from what she’d left behind in Waco, Texas.

Nonetheless, Karen had attempted to make contact with Hawk after her aunt had reined in her hurt and anger.

Unfortunately, the woman on the other end of the phone told her that the former owner had sold the ranch to her and had moved out of town.

When Karen inquired to the whereabouts, the woman said she didn’t have a clue.

She had known that Hawk’s father was in poor health. After his wife had died, he’d taken to drinking and was experiencing liver failure.

It didn’t take a genius to fill in the blanks – Hawk’s father had most likely passed. Hawk had sold the ranch, but where was he?

Her heart broke every time that she thought about him. The longing had never stopped, nor for her deep love for this man.

Shortly after her graduation, Aunt Rose had a long talk with her as she’d been concerned about her health.

Karen was a good fifteen pounds underweight, she had no drive to live – and although she had reached a legal age – she had no idea where to start looking for Hawk.

And would he still be waiting for her? Was he married? Possibly with a couple of kids by now?

Rose had made a decision. They would migrate back to Texas. They would begin the search in Waco. And she assured Karen that they would find him.

Karen was aware of the great sacrifice on her aunt’s part – of the pain that would await her when they arrived back in Waco.

But no amount of money in the world was worth risking her life for!

The two cowboys were still heehawing, slapping their hands on their jeans as Rose was flipped up in the air, landing with a loud splat back onto the saddle again, one of her withered hands held high like a professional bull rider as she continued to tame the beast below her.

"What the devil!" Hawk yelled out, running to the corral which was quite a feat in itself in the tall leather cowboy boots.

Some idiot was on top of the deliriously-wild-looking Old Buck, and good grief - the horse was bucking in fast speed, the woman flaying about, one hand in the air as she whooped and hollered.

His two hired-hand idiots were in a state of hysteria, just outside the fence surrounding the corral, slapping their jeans as they enjoyed the show.

He saw another lady out of his peripheral vision standing beside of the fence surrounding the corral but didn’t have time to pay her notice – not with wild looking woman’s life on the line.
