The road was filled with ruts and in some spots, so flooded that Miguel was almost unable to pass.

"How bad is it at the hacienda?" Silver asked, trying to keep her mind off the rising waters.

"It shall survive, which is more than I can say for my Padre's house," he told her, his eyes not leaving the road. "He is muy upset. There were two bracelets which Little Pajaro made - the only remembrance he had of her and they went with the storm. Perhaps they are hidden in the rubble."

A tear touched her eye and she felt acutely sad for Juan.

By the time they arrived at the hacienda it was nightfall, made darker by the aftermath of the storm.

Juan met them and quickly ushered Silver to Carmen's bedside, his face pale and concerned for her.

Carmen's beauty had faded and she looked like an old woman, shriveled and withdrawn, still wrapped in shock.

Juan huddled in a nearby chair, his hands clasped and his eyes closed as if he were praying while Silver examined his beloved wife.
