She pointed to the leather sofa on the other side of the room and in her heavily accented tongue she continued, "I will find Antonio and tell him you are here, little pajaro."

Sliver watched her exit the room, wanting her Spanish pocket dictionary so she could look up the two unfamiliar words; piñas and pajaro. But no sooner had she sat upon the plush leather sofa than Conchita had returned with two large and strong-looking men.

One could tell they were Spaniards rather than of Mexican heritage just by looking at them. The parhelic waves of the Mexican sun had bronzed their smooth hides to perfection and she thought the men were quite striking.

Their handsome faces were inset with dazzling blue eyes. The younger man was larger and had a clipped sailor's beard stitched onto his rugged-looking face.

But it was the clean-shaven man who spoke as they approached her.

"Buenos dias, Senorita. Coma esta usted?"
