Quatrain studied herself in the oval mirror that was fastened inside the door of the ancient chifforobe. She looked like a cheap snake in the slinky, silver outfit - like a broken roll of quarters. She had hated this dress since the day Fab had given it to her.

And she was getting weary of taking orders from her brothers and grandfather. Frustration seized her. She was twenty-five and had been taking care of them for years now - as a young girl into her womanhood. The death of her father had worsened the situation, even though her grandfather had honorably stepped in to run the farm. But there were things around the house that her brothers seemed incapable of doing, specifically cleaning, washing and cooking.

She continued studying her shape in the mirror. Twenty-five and never been kissed. Not that she hadn't wanted that. But no one wanted to date a woman with five baby brother birds and a grandfather bird in tow. It was like having five grown kids, she silently mocked.

Over the years, Far had hinted of a relationship, but if he were the last man on earth and she were the last woman, the end of the world would soon transpire. He was about as appealing to her as the raunchy, too-slinky outfit he had purchased for her - one that she had wanted to reject, but there hadn't been a way around that without crushing his feelings. Particularly since her brothers had accepted it for her that day - a day she'd sooner forget than remember.
