A Free Love Story - White Lightning, a Sky Taylor romance - Chapter 1 - Page 2

His bushy mustache twitched and he argued, "Don't boss me, Quatrain! I'll come and go, when and where I please. I'm taking advantage of the good weather while she lasts." He paused, then scanned the pecan tree where the empty shells clung to the naked tree. "Never seen it so cold here. Ain't been a killing frost in two years."

Good weather?  Quatrain studied him secretly, regarding the determined chin so much like her own. Before Grandpa's hair had turned to silver, it had been a coppery color as her own, but she was the only Kenyan with satiny apricot-colored skin. Her brothers were all dark-skinned, leathered-looking like their Grandpa Jackson.

"Where'd you come from, son?" Grandpa drawled as Quatrain whirled around, puzzled by his acknowledgement.

A stranger sat on a dun-colored, snorting mare, a puff of white smoke curling from its nostrils and she would have screamed out in shock if the stranger hadn't taken her breath away with his good looks.   

Without bothering to identify himself, he clipped out, "Word is out that you're running shine on the side. Any truth to the rumor?"
