The moment was shattered as Colt entered the barn unexpectedly and Quatrain whirled around to meet him. He swiftly digested the situation, then asked, "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine, Colt, but I'm uncertain about Liberty," she told him, nodding towards the heaving mare. "I had to turn the foal-"

"What?"

"I-I had to turn the foal," she repeated and as he looked on, she couldn't decide if it was a look of admiration or disbelief. She tacked on, "She's with twins."

He winced his mouth, then knelt by Liberty, talking so sweetly, tears sprang to Quatrain's eyes. If the horse didn't foal soon, something would have to be done - and for whatever reason Colt was here, she was glad, because she knew that she couldn't put Liberty down.
