Unchained Werewolf©

Gypsy & Werewolf Stories, Sky at Dusk

Sebastian dimmed the lantern he had been swinging from his extended arm, trying to catch sight of what was making a hideous howling noise in the distance. The near distance, at that.

He had arrived at the campsite just before midnight, having difficultly finding the campgrounds in the encroaching darkness.

It didn't help that he had forgotten his glasses - the fault of his wife's nagging tongue.

He'd gotten a later start than he'd anticipated, his wife chagrining him for deserting her for the weekend - opting for the company of river fish instead.

They smelled a lot better than her too, Sebastian silently decided, still a bit miffed at her lack of understanding.

They were together all week, for gosh sakes. What was wrong with a man getting out into the Great Outdoors for a relaxing weekend?

Betty wouldn't be at home most of the weekend anyway, for she liked to roam relentlessly through the malls of the city.

Payday always came on Friday; and as soon as the paycheck hit home, she had to get rid of it as quickly as possible. No sense letting it build up in the bank for that rainy day.

Earlier on his way into the campground, a carload of wild-eyed campers were tearing out of the park gates.

Sebastian suddenly wondered if it had to do with that disturbing howling in the distance. The near distance, at that.

Perhaps a lost dog. Or, perhaps a family pet that was no longer wanted.

People were like that; can't resist the puppies, can't wait to kick out the dog. Perhaps a rescue would be in order - but of course, Betty wouldn't approve of that either.

Giving up on locating the source of the noise, Sebastian decided to strike up a campfire as the park appeared to be empty of campers. Odd thing too, as this was generally a very popular park with the campers. Was a cold night, though, but the wind lay as still as a kitten licking cream from a saucer.

Time and the flickering firelight must have entranced Sebastian, for he suddenly jerked to life from his slumping position by the fire, his small package of sleep ripped open by the howl in the distance. The near distance, at that.

Through his daze, a clouded figure appeared to be nearing his campsite.

Sebastian ran a tired forearm over his brow, trying to erase the embers of sleep.

The approaching image appeared to be very large, but of course, Sebastian was groggy and situated in a sitting stance.

Being such, he supposed that a person was going to look larger than life from this angle. Or, was it a person? Everything was so fuzzy...

"Hey, stranger," Sebastian greeted, his legs a bit too numb to rise as he'd been sitting Indian style for a mite too long and feared rigor mortis had settled in.

"Sit a spell with me?" he invited, as was his friendly, outgoing nature, a trait that Betty despised.

She had her own circle of friends, snobs and other rich queens of the city who were actually totally out of her league.

She detested Sebastian's relaxed friends and always made it known whenever they would be brave enough to pop by the house for a casual visit.

Sebastian was startled as the figure snarled and emitted a loud growl. He detected pain in the gesture, and Sebastian strained his sleepy eyes; eyes which would still not fully focus.

"Ah.....you're in pain, big fellow?" he plied, now realizing that his company was not human, rather the animal who owned the viscous howl he'd heard earlier. Perhaps that dog? Maybe a maimed wolf?

The animal suddenly shifted from a growl to a soft whine. Obviously, a friendly beast, Sebastian decided amid his wool gathering.

Lucky for him, too, for by the sound of that earlier growl, it wouldn't be anything for this beast to perform an instant shredding of him.

"Here, come here, fellow," he urged, patting the warm ground beside him. "Let me try to see your problem and maybe I can help."

He heard some shuffling and saw the animal cautiously moving towards him on four furry legs, the front paw causing him to stumble as he made his way over.

"There, there, fellow," Sebastian softly wooed. "Let me see your paw."

Slowly and cautiously, he collected the paw, instantly feeling the root of the animal's intense pain. A fish hook was embedded through the thin skin between the toes.

"Aw..poor devil. Now this might hurt a bit, but only for a few seconds. Be still."

Sebastian threaded the hook through the skin, silently praying that the beast wouldn't bite him. However, he had little choice except to trust him. In fact, the trust was mutual.

The animal emitted a loud howl, piercing Sebastian's ear and causing him to rear back a bit, though he didn't relent the paw and quickly continued to work, threading the hook through the paw until it was free.

The howling instantly stopped and just as quickly, Sebastian was pounced on by the beast, knocked flat back. He braced for the worse and was relieved as the beast began licking him intensely over the face.

He laughed, wrapping his large arms around the animal, who was obviously quite grateful.

He could now make out the shape of what he assumed to be a large dog. Perhaps dumped in the wilderness by uncaring masters who no longer wanted him.

Thirty minutes later, Sebastian had applied some antibacterial cream to the wound and was comforted by the animal's company.

It was too late to stroke up a fire, so he reached for can of beer from his ancient ice chest. His new friend settled in beside him and Sebastian stroked his mane and chatted as he enjoyed his beer.

"I wish that I could stay out here forever, fellow. Only pain and suffering back home."

He sighed, then continued, "What a pickle I locked myself into. I thought I was marrying a princess but she was a bridezilla in disguise. I get so tired and weary of being chained to a life that I don't like living."

Sebastian looked at his newfound friend and eased out, "Wish I could be like you ......  free to roam, free to go and come as I please. Free to run by the river under the moon."

He laughed, then continued, "We'd be the best of friends, wouldn't we fellow? Never any arguing - just enjoy the moonlight."

Five beers later, Sebastian didn't even feel the bite of the werewolf as she, not he, pierced his thick skin.

All he remembered was waking up, running side-by-side with his newfound friend and mate.  Finally free.....
