The Sea Gypsy©

Gypsy & Werewolf Stories, Sky at Dusk

Written by American Author Sky Taylor

There once lived a gypsy that was so fond of the sea that his friends nicknamed him the Sea Gypsy.

Hours upon hours, days upon days, weeks upon weeks and months upon months the Sea Gypsy traveled the seas in search of a treasure that most said did not exist - a beautiful mermaid.

But not just any mermaid.

The Sea Gypsy's mermaid must possess green fins, ruby red lips, blue eyes and blond hair. He vowed that anything less would be tossed back into the sea.

On the Sea Gypsy's thirty-fifth birthday as he was out casting for mermaids, the net was very full and difficult to reel back into the boat.

The Sea Gypsy stained his strong arms until so much sweat filled the boat, he feared he might be in danger of sinking.

However, nothing at this point could have made the Sea Gypsy relinquish the catch in the net.

After eight strenuous hours, he was exhausted, but was soon to reap the rewards of his efforts. For when he tugged the casting net one final time, it landed into the boat with a loud thud and a beautiful mermaid came rolling out of the net and did not stop until she reached the opposite side of the boat.

The Sea Gypsy was immediately beside her, wrestling her with one arm as she tried to jump ship to return to her home in the sea.

"Not so fast, mermaid!" he commanded, his eyes assessing his treasure.

To his great disappointment, the mermaid held a head of thick red hair and her fin was as yellow as a sinking sun. Her lips were as pink as coral, and her eyes, as green as emeralds.

The Sea Gypsy continued to eye his catch.

Too bad that she didn't have a least one desirable feature, he thought in silence. Perhaps he could change the color of her hair, and her lips - but what could be done about those eyes and that fin?

He had to admit that she was quite beautiful - even if she wasn't a blue-eyed, blond haired mermaid. And she sang so sweetly, lulling him into a deep afternoon sleep.

When the Sea Gypsy awoke, it took a moment for him to get his senses about him.

His first thought should have been focused on the direction of his boat, but for some reason, his mermaid sprung to mind. She was nowhere in sight.

He stumbled up, then lumbered towards the wheel of the boat only the discover her stationed there, balancing on her tail and gliding the boat better than a seasoned sailor would have done.

She glanced back at him and smiled, then eased out in a high voice, "I've decided to stay. And once that I decide something, it's final."

"But you can't stay!" the Sea Gypsy snapped out. "You're not blond - and....and you don't have blue eyes. I only have a need for a mermaid that suits my personal fancy - and....well, you just won't do."

But there was nothing that could be done to reverse the situation. The mermaid had decided and once a mermaid decides something, it's decided and nothing can be done about it.

The Sea Gypsy had to admit that the mermaid was very pleasing to the eyes.

In fact, he had never glimpsed anything quite so exquisite, so beautiful and refined.

Over the next fortnight, the mermaid cooked for him and she cleaned for him and she coaxed him thrice into giving her a kiss.

The Sea Gypsy decided that his mermaid must have a name, so he named her Fantasia which seemed to suit the mermaid well.

On this certain day, the Sea Gypsy was out fishing - casting his net when a familiar thing happened. His net was heavy and full, and after an hour of wrestling it in, out flopped a mermaid onto the deck of his boat.

The Sea Gypsy couldn't believe his fortune! All these months fishing for mermaid, and within a fortnight - he catches not one, but two!

And this catch was his lucky catch for the mermaid held a head of golden blond hair, beautiful blue eyes, ruby red lips and her fin was the perfect color that the Sea Gypsy had imagined. Surely fate had rewarded him.

Fantasia seemed very depressed and immediately went below the deck to have a long cry, for she had fallen head over fins in love with the Sea Gypsy and she knew that he would now discard her and keep the mermaid with the hair of blond.

As the Sea Gypsy watched Fantasia depart in sorrow, he realized that the love of his life was slipping away.

Without wasting a second longer, he released the blond haired mermaid back into the sea and went directly to his beloved Fantasia who greeted him with open arms and fin.

Moral of the story: True love comes in strange packages and two fins don't make a right.
