Wagonwheel, a Free Online Love Story by Sky Taylor - Page 1
Chapter 1
The fog slowly lifted. Caftan was pierced with a sense of relief as the winding strip of road framed into clarity and she maneuvered the compact car towards her destination; Wagonwheel, one of the largest ranches anchored in this section of the country. Due to its obscurity, as well as the serene scenery, her stay at the ranch promised to be more of a vacation than a temporary assignment.
The remote area was painted with mere traces that man had left behind. The road beneath her, strands of electrical lines and the sign which she now saw in the near distance which scrolled out in carved wooden letters "Wagonwheel', an arrow to the right pointing to the east.
About time, she silently acknowledged, relaxing in the process. The four-hour journey had been a challenge due to the area being shrouded in a thick fog which seemed to not only serve to confuse man, but the animals as well. About an hour back along the winding road, a coyote had bolted into her path, Caftan barely managing to escape the potentially disastrous situation.
Knowing her Aunt Minerva, she was probably walking on pins and needles, as Caftan was running behind schedule. Aunty fussed and sputtered a bit like an ancient furnace, all well intended. The old girl was getting on in age, the toll of life combined with managing the Jacobs' household at Wagonwheel a challenge to the most fit of bodies. Thirteen children, but of course, Dain, Ben, Aaron and Jason were grown men. Even so, as they had chosen to make the ranch home-base, Aunt Minerva still had a heavy yolk to balance.
