By the time she reached the beach, the air mirrored a sand storm. Justin was the official sand-slinger, his target - the angry stranger who was struggling to cover his eyes amid violent coughs, cursing so loudly that all the gulls had fled the area. Jan was on the beach, on her tummy - biting his ankle, holding on like a leech.

"Jan!  Justin!  Over here!  Now!!" she yelled and to her great relief, they immediately obeyed.

Mickey was still glued to her hand, crying and rubbing his eyes with his little fist, spitting sand from his open mouth.  

After she performed a quick inspection of the children she turned to vent her anger on the stranger.

"How dare you!  I have a good mind to call the authorities-"

"Me?" he objected in disbelief, still hopping on one leg as he held his ankle with one hand.  "Those little bantlings of yours belong in a zoo.  She bit me," he accused, pointing to Jan.
