Getting Mr. Tanner on the gurney wasn't an easy task.   At the sound of her short command, Amigo was by her side, tugging and pulling the load along with her.  

It was a long and languorous journey and until now, Kimber had never realized the length of a mile.   By the time the little cabin appeared in the distance through the green canopy of the woods, her delicate hands were stinging with blisters.

With sheer determination, she pulled the stranger into the cabin and hoisted him up on the built-in bed located in one corner of the tiny area.

The air was still hot and steamy from summer's breath so she set the oscillating fan into motion, the breeze sending cold chills along her damp neck where perspiration had accumulated. Thank goodness that the generator was working.

Amigo was beside her, looking a bit tired.   He had been a canine warrior, never giving up until they had reached the cabin.   Without him, she would not have made it back with the cumbersome load.

She transferred her attention to the stranger, silently wondering if they had done the right thing.   What if he was one of the bad guys? What evil had he done to deserve such punishment - shot, then dropped from the sky and left for dead in the still of the woods?

In his current condition, at least he would not present an immediate threat.   And what else could she have done?   Left him to die as had been intended by his assailants?
