" Well, I won't argue with you on that one," he drawled, sobering a bit as he detected her anger.   " Kimber, better to be flat-chested than to be emotionally flat-lined."

The comment soothed her raw nerves, her appetite returning.

For the next four weeks, Dakota grew stronger, the two of them and Amigo taking long walks in the woods.   They often frequented the swimming hole as well, escaping the suffocating heat of the day.  

Although he claimed to detest canines, Kimber often caught Dakota playing with Amigo out of the corner of her eye.   The red ball was getting a lot of wear and tear these days.

At night, he refused to take her bed, instead finding refuge on the small love-seat.   Kimber was aware of his misery for he was scrunched up like a beach ball and he stirred often at night.   Still, nothing she could say would sway his decision.

She had grown fond of his company and was slowly beginning to dread the day when he would leave.   They had become good friends and since the day they had played " One-Question" , he had not infringed on her private thoughts, rather had proven to be a good friend and companion.

Today, they would share a picnic of Dakota's favorites: fried chicken, potato salad, biscuits, iced tea and a chocolate cake.   He continually told her what a wonderful cook that she was and even made claim that he didn't know how his stomach would manage once her brother arrived and whisked him back to the land of the living.
