Sugar Pie, a short love story by Sky Taylor - Page 6 The crowd settled again as the judge picked up another sheet of paper and in a clear tone, read, "Ladies and gentlemen, the winner of the blue ribbon, the five-hundred dollars and a date with Mayor Chad Connolly is Number 9!" The crowd went nuts again, Chad gazing anxiously into thin air as he tried to spy the winner. A mild curse slipped off his lips as Mary Jane yelled, springing out of her chair and bouncing about, then suddenly the little lady beside her stood to her feet.
As the crowd grew silent and started mumbling, the discombobulated Judge Wilburn managed to blurt out, "What? We have two winners? Come on ladies, I know that Mayor Connolly is quite a prize, but...." The crowd laughed, the sound rumbling through the tent as Kitty looked anxiously at the Mayor, then to Mary Jane who was still bobbing up and down like some fish. Then suddenly, the situation must have dawned on her, for she halted her bobbing, then shook her head at Kitty. "Sit down," she ordered through clenched teeth. "You're stealing my thunder." |
