Sugar Pie, a short love story by Sky Taylor - Page 5 At least the judges had whittled the potential winner down to ten entries before he'd had to dig in. And the winner had been quite clear, he reflected, longing to reach up and dislodge a small piece of pecan bitter from a back tooth that one of the contestants had overlooked. He'd never seen so many pies in his life - from fried pies to flatpies, each embedded with a personalize flair. His attention was drawn to one of the judges as he stood behind the podium, the crowd clapping - some men in the back whistling to add a bit of excitement to the event.
"Thank you, thank you ladies and gentleman," Judge Wilburn drawled as the crowd settled. "And now, for the moment that you've all been waiting for," he eased out, drawing up the prized blue ribbon. "The lucky winner will receive this beautiful blue ribbon and this handsome check," he continued, holding up the piece of paper as the men in the back whistled and cheered again. The judge lifted his hand, the crowd settling again as he continued, "And a date with our newly elected Mayor Chad Connolly!" The crowd went nuts, Kitty drawing a hand to her fragile throat, Mary Jane straining her neck like some giraffe as she sought to get a clear glimpse of Chad Connolly as a lady and her young daughter passed in front of them. |
