Why he had allowed the sheriff into talking him into this dating situation, he did not know. He suddenly felt as if he were on the auctioning block, only he was choosing the winning bidder. He supposed that being forty and still a bachelor had made him an open target. However, he hadn't found the right woman - and he wasn't a man looking to settle for second-best.
Hopefully, he would choose the winning pie of a lady that was already hitched. Heck, the way that his luck was running, he would pick a male's entry, suddenly wondering if any men had entered the contest. God help him if he picked Mary Jane's pie. The woman was one solid yap - enough to make a man come down with a case of the twitches. His eyes batted swiftly as they suddenly connected with her, then he jetted his glance back onto the table of pies which wasn't the best spot to focus upon, because he was so full of pie that his belt was in need of a major adjustment.
