Then again, she was accustomed to the local’s familiar accents. Most had been unfortunate in obtaining a good education.

To her thoughtful silence he continued, “That’s a brand new car. Can you imagine? It’s incomprehensible that it should break down - particularly in this godforsaken area. And my cell phone is completely dead.”

She told him, “I’ll be glad to give you a lift but I must warn you that I won’t be heading towards town until later today. However, feel free to ride with me if you like.”

“Fine,” he nodded briskly, his tense face relaxing. “And thank you for your kindness. I’ve been stranded here for most of the morning and you’re the first person that has passed this way.”

Leaning into the car he collected a leather briefcase then paused to lock the doors, Breckland knowing it was wasted energy.

He placed his bag in the back of her jeep, climbed in and held out his hand to her. “Thanks again. I’m Kirk by the way.”

“I’m Breckland,“ she smiled, accepting his hand, noting that it had a smooth texture. Yes, this one used his brains to survive, she decided amid her analysis of him. Hands too smooth for manual work.
