“Now look what you’ve done!” he complained, tossing them onto his father’s bed. “And she’s headed over here.”

“Aw, who cares about her?” Mick mocked, then continued, “I want to meet the mama.”

“Dad, you push me beyond all limits,” Mick told him, his irritation unmasked. “If I were wise, I’d get you a place of your own -”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah - heard that before,” Wolfe mocked, his face hemmed with mischievousness. “I hear the doorbell,” he eased out.

Wolfe followed him down the stairs, Mick deciding that his father had the energy of a man one-third his age. Of course, curiosity killed the cat, he went on to mock.

Flinging open the door, the beautiful Jacqueline stood outlined in full fury.

“Now, now - let’s don’t overreact,” Mick warned, noting Ms. Hatcher’s old gray head curiously looking on from across the street. She was tending to her rose garden today and ever since his father had stood her up when she’d asked him out, she’d had a vendetta against them.

“You sir, are a peeping tom!” Jacqueline hurled out, her dark hair fraying around her head like a devil’s halo.
