Elaine was silent a few moments, then eased out, “I’ve done a fantastic job on you, dear. I’ve aged you at least fifty years. The wig…..the football shoulder pads….the patty-cake of makeup.” She smiled smugly, then continued, “Bet no one will accuse you of being inexperienced now - you old dear, you.”
Jordan looked into the mirror and grimaced. The football pads made her head look at least three times too small for her body - like some alien from Beetlejuice.
“Elaine, I have an outstanding resume, with references out the kazoo from my English clients-”
“Which you’ve been pitching since you’re last job ended - six months now, dear,” Elaine managed, tightening her lips in the process. “What are you down to? Fifty dollars between you and the gutter?”
“Twenty,” Jordan bit out unwillingly.
“Then come on, granny - let’s get a move on,” Elaine decided, jerking her out of the chair and guiding her out of the house before she could change her mind, Jordan deciding that Elaine exhibited super-human strength for such a small fry.
“I’m not doing this - I swear, I’m not going through with this nonsense, Elaine.”
Thirty minutes later, Elaine steered the sleek gray sedan in front of the Strom residence, which looked more like a castle than a family home. Then again, it was along the line of Jordan’s expectations as only the wealthy could afford to hire a nanny. If only they were willing to pay like royalty - but seldom was the case, she sadly reflected.
Elaine killed the engine and informed, “Mister and Mrs. Strom are elderly, and they are in charge of their grandchildren for the summer as the parents are touring Europe. That’s a leg-up, right out of the batting cage, eh? Something in common. Oh my - it‘s all so foreign - so exciting!“ Then, “Your duties will be minimal - just performing the basic schooling required for an eight year old and a ten year old. And Harry said that both kids are very well mannered.”
