Rock was sweet she balanced, continuing to compare the two beyond sane reasoning.   But at thirty-five he was rather set in his ways.   If he wasn’t so much older than her then Maggie supposed that father might have blessed rather than cursed the engagement.

Her mind flew back in time and she could actually hear her father’s voice echoing in her head. " Maggie, I refuse to allow you to marry Rip Van Winkle!" he had sputtered out upon receiving the unerring news.   Then he had continued in a distasteful tone, " Good heavens, it’s like a mouse marrying a parrot, or some one hundred and fifty-year old tortoise!"

Rock had scrubbed his boots against the marbled floor of the library that day and had countered, " Maybe it’d be better to think of us as a horsey fly and -"
" Horsey fly my ass!" her father had angrily retorted, his white head electrified.   " More like a fly in the ointment, you perverted little weasel!"

Then after calling Rock a dozen more animal names, Jess had tried to buy him off to Maggie’s open horror, that thought suddenly reminding her of Travis again.   But Rock had firmly refused any offer from her father, except his new sheriff job, which Maggie still could not figure.   For weeks her father had few  around like a giant wasp unable to find a landing spot, slandering poor Rock at every given opportunity.   Then suddenly and without warning, Jess revolved into Rock’s ‘buddy’.

At first, it had appeared to Maggie as answered prayers, and then father had ruined everything by announcing that silly sheriff’s position at the Junction along the border.
