" You should have known we’d come back," he told them, bringing the cigar out of his mouth and thoughtfully studying it.  Then he ordered Miguel, " Go up the hill by the girl who lays sleeping.  If I yell out, then kill her."

 

Maggie saw Travis stiffen in the shadows, but with the guns aimed at them, there was nothing he could do…for the moment.

 

" Si!   Si!" he echoed and then he clomped away in his large dingo boots to stand guard over the sleeping Edwina.

 

" We lay a good trap, no?" Hupert laughed, waving the rifle as his round belly shook. " Such good little hostages!"

 

" All right, cowboy," Ralph addressed the silent Travis. " You and your woman come along peaceably or Miguel will gladly kill your friend.   And he’s a bit trigger happy, I’m afraid," he went on to confide, laughing in the process, Hupert joining in.   " He hasn’t had that chance since last week and he’s mighty, mighty eager.   He likes to use his dull whalebone knife."
