"Before our light goes out
completely, we'll make a small fire in the ditch by your car and enjoy some
grub," he drawled. "Lucky thing I was coming from the market."
"We're staying here for the
night?" Fayne squeaked, unable to accept what he was suggesting.
"Uh huh," Nick confirmed,
observing Fayne's frightened-looking face through the dim light. "Come
morning, there should be a few locals pass this way who can provide assistance."
"Can't you fix the truck?"
"I could have if the battery
in your car hadn't been smashed to smithereens," he told her.
"I-I see." Then, "Maybe
we can walk to your house-"
"Almost twenty miles without
a light? Yeah, right," he mocked with a short laugh.
Fayne was so unhinged that she reached
over and grabbed his forearm and blurted out, "But what about the ghost?
It's not safe here."
