Fayne almost screamed as she was
nudged forward, feeling a set of icy hands on her back. Then again, she had
merely stumbled on the thickly entwined branches creeping up alongside the ditch.
If only her nitwit brother hadn't told her that these woods were haunted - to
avoid them at all costs. If only she hadn't goofed up at the turn off. If only
she hadn't skidded the car off the dirt road. If only...
"I take it that you're okay?"
Nick threaded through the uncomfortable silence as they continued sizing
one another up, Fayne jerked from her creepy 'if only' thoughts.
Now what? Should she attempt a conversation
with the stranger? Suppose he was an evil passer-by? Suppose he wasn't
as civilized as he appeared - minus the beer hat, of course. Suppose-
"Suppose I'll just drive away
seeing that you don't need me-"
"Please don't!" Fayne
squeaked, coming to life.
With only a hand's space of light
between daylight and dusk, she realized that she'd have to take her chances.
Nick quirked his right eyebrow over
her response, a bit pleased over her sense of anxiousness. He watched her lick
the voluptuous red lips, then she told him, "As you can see, I'm a ways
from-from.....God knows what town....and I didn't bring along my hiking boots."
