At least his hands were free and
he immediately made use of them by taking her shoulders and mildly shaking her.
"Fayne, settle down. You're
gonna scare yourself to death," he warned, trying to calm her.
"I saw a ghost!" she hissed,
her warm breath washing over his face, her eyes looking like two giant saucers.
"I assure you that I did!"
Quite slowly, Nick told her, "Fayne,
you probably saw heat flashes - or foxfire."
"I didn't see a fox, I saw
a ghost," she assured, hugging even closer to him.
Nick sighed, Fayne feeling like
bursting into tears again. What could she do to convince him?
"Come on, let's get a fire
going before the chill of the night settles into our bones," he suggested.
"Hey, do you like cheese?"

feeling more like a mouse than a human. And what was with all the squeaking?
Probably due to all the screaming as her throat felt a bit raw.
