Sandcastles & Mermaids, a Free Online Love Story by Sky Taylor - Page 1

Mary Houston poked her snow-white head over her darling husband’s shoulder as he viewed the beach scene through the multi-pane glass windows with great interest, the waves crashing in the distance against the glittering sand - a feast for the eyes.

Indeed it was going to be another hot one today - although perfect weather for the scheduled Tiki Torch Party tonight Mary decided.

Up well into their seventies, it had become their favorite past time - spying on the resort guests. And their mischievous streak didn’t set well with their son, Jay - the owner of The Sandcastle Resort. All too often he complained, “You two spies are going to be the demise of this resort! And then the three of us will all be homeless! Nosey, nosey, nosey! Get a hobby, why don’t you!”

Humph! This was their hobby, Mary silently mocked, deciding to sling those thoughts into the invisible wind. What did Jay know anyway? Well into his thirties and still single - this bright, very handsome son of hers.

Instead, she set her attention on her doting husband of fifty-six years, Harry. Her one and only love. Without Harry, life would be meaningless. Heaven knew that Jay didn’t have anything of interest to offer. Grandchildren in their future? Not likely.

“Out of the seven beach houses, and out of all the guests - this guest in particular is the most interesting, don’t you agree, darling?” she asked her husband, dropping a kiss onto his bald head, a mischievous smile lining her generous, red-painted lips before she returned her gaze to the large windows and the dazzling view beyond.

“Oh yes, Mary - I do at that,” Harry nodded, refusing to shift his glance from the scene in front of him - guest Elizabeth Manchester, to be exact. “This vixen definitely has her sights set on our son Jay, doesn’t she?”

“Um hum. But…..it appears that the feeling isn’t mutual,” Mary eased out, reflecting on the events of the day.

Elizabeth’s direct advances towards Jay had been down-right embarrassing and although she was anxious for grandchildren, this woman wasn’t ‘the one’ for their son.

Mary continued to verbally reflect, “She’s a determined little thing, that’s for sure.”

“I’ve been timing her,” Harry informed, taking a moment to glance at his inexpensive timepiece.

“How long has she been planted in the sand?”
