Mitzi continued, trying to extinguish some of her sister's anger, "Mr. Lancer is an overbearing, arrogant warlord. He doesn't care about our struggling little ranch, Bianca. He has secured the surrounding land that once appealed to him and Calico Blue was not a part of his ambitions, no matter what you believe. Things are not the same as when you left three years ago. After the Lancers moved into the area-"

"He has choked out three-quarters of the ranchers," Bianca bitterly mocked, cutting her sister off abruptly, her tone almost delirious. "We are fortunate to have even survived! Calico Blue cannot be bargained for!" She sighed, her foot pressing harder still on the gas pedal.

Mitzi fretted. "Slow down! The last thing we need is a ticket."

"What? Out here in this godforsaken Texas wilderness?" Bianca mocked with a tight laugh. "Just how big is Rebel Lancer's spread? We've been driving a good ten minutes since we left our ranch."

Then before Mitzi could reply she continued rapidly, "Ah, there it is in devilish splendor," the magnificent ranch surfacing in the distance like a lost sun on a cold desert floor. "Mark my words, Mitzi, if our father had not taken ill - if he had not been forced to be transported to the clinic three years ago, I would have already managed this Lancer fellow. Guts, Mitzi; guts. He may have bought off the other ranchers, but Calico Blue is not for sale!"

"You still don't understand!" Mitzi tossed out uselessly. "If Mr. Lancer had wanted our ranch he would have taken it long ago -"
