Then Cotton said, "We already know one another, Boss. Say, did you find that set of drawers that you were looking for?" he suddenly asked Bianca. The land was engulfed in a deafening silence, even the cattle mute for the moment. Bianca groped for words, her mind a muddle as Rebel looked hostilely on. His anger appeared directed at Cotton, however, rather than at her and it was the only point that lent her any security.
She knew how touchy that Rebel was regarding her and his men. Then it hit her - the answer to Cotton's throbbing question. "Oh!" she finally managed. "The dresser drawers that I was trying to find. I remembered it was in the attic," she completed and everyone seemed to relax except Cotton, who hadn't appeared to be phased in the least over his innocent question. "Ya did?" he echoed loudly. "Well, whenever you want me to get your drawers, just let me know and we'll go. And get it, that is." After the incident, Rebel sent the men on their way, riding pasture. He was less talkative to her than usual but she enjoyed herself anyway. Perhaps it was good that he was mute; it appeared to be the only time that they truly got along. The land was so open and wide that it gave one a sense of inner strength, of power. Bianca felt close to Rebel, being with him here - in his own element, and quite flattered that he had wanted to share the day with her.
