“Fine, just fine,” he assured, then he was on his way.

Landon led Pepper to a shady spot, letting Wade and Venus fend on their own.  

His voice was endearing as he spoke openly to her.  “Pepper, when The Blue Dolphin gave way, I thought that you were lost.  I-I can’t explain what I felt – how crushed that I felt – as though I had lost everything dear.”  

He softly grasped her shoulders and continued as he looked deeply into her eyes, the windows of her soul, and said, “Only a handful of days, and I know that we belong together. Do you feel this too?”

Pepper swallowed the lump in her throat and managed a nod.  “Yes, I feel it too, Landon…”

He captured her lips, spinning her world upside down and inside out.  Afterwards, she snuggled into his arms and fell into a deep contented sleep…..

From her delirium she heard Pappy echo, “Landon!  They all made it!  Everyone but the five of us!  Tis a miracle – a miracle I tell ya! Even the damned little dog made it!”

The good news refueled the three of them.  Pappy and Landon had assembled a shelter of large palm leaves while Pepper gathered wood.  

Earlier, Pappy had discovered several fish lined on the beach, victims of the storm.  It was decided that they would have to do for nourishment.
