Pepper widened her eyes through the distance and yelled back, "Look! He’s with Pappy!” 

Mildred was rising and sinking, and it appeared that she wasn’t going to make it.  

The next thing Pepper knew, Pappy was there, supporting the older woman, cramming Bobo into her arms and holding tight to her waist. 

“Grandma!  Don’t lose Bobo!” Frankie screamed. 

“She won’t, darling,” Pepper assured.  “And be still!  Both of you!”

He yelled something out again as they fought the waves that overtook the craft. Pepper instructed Frankie and Penny to hold tight around her neck.  They did; so well in fact, that she felt close to passing out for lack of oxygen, but she had need of her arms in order to stand a chance. 

A small boat came into view, but it wasn’t very steady and Pepper feared that it too might overturn.  Mildred and Bobo were hoisted up into the boat first, then Penny and Frankie.  When Pepper would have climbed into the boat, the boom broke and caught Pappy across the temple.  He went spiraling away from her, gliding across the waves.
