Landon drew his dark, thick brows together and finally accepted her extended hand, which she shook vigorously, trying to convey her sincerity.

He warned her, “I wouldn’t pass judgment until you’ve met the children. They are quite a handful.” 

At that moment, two small figures raced toward them, their faces masked with curiosity. They stopped directly in front of her and she eyed them with a smile, Landon forgotten for the moment. 

“Let me guess,” she eased out mysteriously to the two with tongue in check. “You’re Penny and you’re Frankie,” she said, pointing to each child. 

“Gee, you’re prettier than Venus!” Penny decided, and Pepper noticed the cute gap between her front eyeteeth.

“There, Bobo!  Good boy,” she cooed, petting the pooch, the runner going unnoticed by her own eyes. 

“Gee! And she likes Bobo too!” Frankie echoed in a cheerful voice, delighted by the discovery. "Venus sorta hates him.” 

Landon suddenly interceded in the conversation, his voice gruff as before. “Venus could be right, Frankie. Pappy, take that dog below! He has ruined Ms. Prescot’s nylons. In fact, it might be best to kennel him as Venus suggested for the duration of our voyage.” 

Both children protested, sending open pleas to their uncle who stood firmly by his decision. Pepper cautiously tried to assume the role of peacemaker.
