Photographing Hummingbirds - Photography Tips How to Photograph Hummingbirds 1. We do not buy the commercial 'nectar'. A more palatable mix is 1 part sugar to 4 parts water and USE distilled water which will prolong the life of the 'nectar'. Omit any food coloring. If mold settles in - hummers will turn their little beaks up and flee while shooting you the claw. But on a more serious note, moldy feeders can give hummingbirds a fungal infection of the tongue which tends to be fatal. Even the slightest bit of mold is enough to trigger an infection, so plan to change out your nectar at least two to three times per week, particularly when living in warmer areas. 2. Hummingbirds quickly adapt to humans, so hang your feeders close and mingle with them often throughout the day so that they become used to your presence. Our hummingbirds have become so used to us that they will fly right up into our faces and look at us for the longest while before drinking. 3. Although ant-proof feeders are available, we have adapted ours by placing a SMALL thin strip of duct tape to the top of our feeders (sticky to the outside). The ants stay away and after all this time, nothing has ever gotten stuck to the tape. (See, duct tape has a good use after all.) 4. Try to position feeders close to a bush or tree. Their little minds see it as a safe haven. 5. Expect spats as hummers can be aggressive towards one another. We have a bully - the smallest of the flock. 6. Shutter speed is vital in achieving photos of the wings.
