Jericho set his troubled thoughts aside and decided to concentrate on the positive. He had a beautiful daughter who he wouldn’t take the world for, Frank would soon be returning with his new bride - and a new cook had been hired to take his place.
All was well. No need to experience all these uncertainties. These paused reflections on the past were common this time of year as the new year looming ahead offered opportunity for improvement.
He looked away from the big-butted scarecrow and eased out to the now-impatient Fiona, “He’s a grand scarecrow. I like him a lot. Good job, little lady,” although Fiona was more tomboy than lady.
One day, he’d have to find the nerve to introduce her to lady things. She’d never worn a dress, never smelled fine perfume - so many ‘nevers’ and it was past-time to rectify he decided, adding to his list of resolutions.
Perhaps with the new cook on board, things could move forward. The ranch was doing well financially maybe it was time to consider a private teacher. There was talk in town of a school and a church, but by the time things came together, Fiona would be grown, he silently considered as her tiny face beamed a wide smile over his nice comments on her scarecrow.
He had taught her the basics - alphabet and recognition of simple words, but a teacher, he wasn’t.
“Thanks, papa!” she told him, running to him and hugging his long legs encased in the thick jeans. Then, “I think that Mabel likes Mister Scarecrow, too.”
Jericho looked to the right to view his daughter’s pet pig who simultaneously sent a wild squeal through the air, her lips suspended completely over her teeth. He suspected that his daughter didn’t love anything more than that pig - including himself.
