After his honeymoon, when Frank hopefully returned to the area with his bride, it would be on much different terms. Rather than cook, he and Kissy would be their new neighbors. And Jericho couldn’t be happier for him as Frank was getting on in years.
“Papa! You’re being too quiet,” Fiona complained, abruptly folding her tiny arms and applying a cute pout to her face which instantly reminded Jericho of his ex-wife, Leah. The child was a miniature replica of her mama. A constant reminder, although that fact didn’t bother Jericho. Whatever Leah had been, she had been beautiful.
And such an unpredictable character. Why, she put Frank in the shade where unpredictability was concerned.
Leah’s pregnancy had been hell on wheels - constant complaining and wishing that ‘it’ had not happened. Amid the birthing process, she blamed every contraction on Jericho, spewing out a line of profanity that made both him and the doctor blush.
A wet nurse had to be called in for nursing purposes as Leah outright refused.
As for the nappies, she wanted nothing to do with that either. In fact, she never held Fiona and continually insisted that the child had been the worst mistake of her life outside of marrying him.
Shortly afterwards, Leah had left the struggling ranch for bigger fish, her departure actually coming as a big relief.
Within months, she had left for Europe with a wealthy merchant, taking time to pen a letter to him before exiting the states.
In short, she was burning her bridges behind her - and that included Fiona.
