Never Look Back - a Free Online Love Story by Sky Taylor - Page 1
Jericho eyed his little daughter’s tilted scarecrow with a critical eye. It looked like hell - more accurately, it looked like his former cook, Frank.  Fiona had dressed the scarecrow in the tattered duds that Frank had accidentally left behind, as he’d been in a hurry to disappear with his mail order bride, Kissy. And Jericho couldn’t blame him women were sparse in this desolate western setting. Not many could tolerate the scorching days of summer and the lack of social graces.  After Kissy had arrived and Frank had excitedly approved of ‘the goods’, he strongly encouraged Jericho to follow suit. But no - he wasn’t in the market for another wife, particularly a mail order bride. The first marriage had ended disastrously and there was Fiona to consider.   Even so, there were moments when he was so lonely, so lost and yes, even fearful of the future. And Fiona must feel much the same, he tacked onto his thoughts. No playmates, only the company of Frank, himself and her pet pig Mabel.  Jericho drew his rugged, sunburned lips together, then lifted a hand to cover his mouth as he continued to eye the scarecrow. Wouldn’t do for Fiona to see him laughing at her masterpiece. The child had worked on the scarecrow all day, and it was hard work for an eight year old.  It was definitely scary. The rear was on the large size and looked more like a prize-pumpkin than the backside of a respectable scarecrow.   Frank had been big-butted ever since Jericho had known him - three decades it must be now, he tacked onto his rambling thoughts as Fiona patiently awaited his critique. He’d been about his daughter’s young age when he’d met Frank, and he‘d been impressed from the get-go. The man had been magical - making quarters disappear and telling stories that made the hair stand-straight-up on the back of Jericho’s neck. And he was the father than Jericho never had.
