The entire house was filled with the enticing scent of her prize-winning meatloaf, a favorite of her father who was due any moment for dinner. Carefully, she extracted the meatloaf and the golden carrot pudding, another prize-winning recipe. She had won so many contests and cooking challenges over the past three years, that she had lost count. But one thing was certain; soon she would be able to discard her job as a vet assistant in her father’s practice and open her own kitchen. The pleasant thoughts helped erase the depressing ones associated with the evening news. There was a thump at the front door and Jordan called out, her father finally arriving. He was running late, but that tended to be his forte. “Father?” No answer. Jordan shut the oven door, then headed towards the front door. Perhaps his hands were loaded with Christmas gifts for the local charity drive. As his and mother’s house was filled with holiday guests, Jordan suspected that he’d be asking her to find space until they would be delivered on Christmas Day.
