If he'd been her husband, he would have a say in her medical treatment. At this point, he felt that the doctors had basically left her to die. The only one that truly seemed to be vested in saving her was her immediate physician, Doctor Jay Summers, although he too had warned Euel that it would take a miracle for recovery.

Euel had sent countless prayers to God, yet Heidi remained lifeless, the hull of the vibrant woman he'd known her to be a short, handful of weeks ago.

The crash had made national news, the drunk driver who had caused the catastrophe dying at the scene with the driver of the semi requiring several surgeries before pulling through. He'd left the hospital two days ago, thankful to be alive.

The clomp of boot heels had him turning towards the door and he relaxed as his ranch foreman Joe entered the room. The cowboy removed his hat as a courtesy and inquired, "How's she doing? Any change?"

"None."

Joe nodded. "Anything the crew can do to help, boss?"

"Pray."

"We have been. And....I spoke with the judge just a while ago."

"And?"

"He's agreed to honor your request - should Heidi's condition change."

"Let's hope that it does."

"I'm off to see the Chaplain, just in case."

"Thanks, Joe."

Alone again, Euel thought again about the 'what might have beens' and amid a rather poignant prayer, he literally broke down in tears, sobbing inconsolably as he leaned his forehead over his beloved Heidi. He knew that he had to let go, but he couldn't.

He was stunned as he felt a hand on top of his head, a frail voice comforting him. "Don't cry. Don't cry."

Euel lifted his head, his dark tear-filled eyes connecting with Heidi's beautiful blues. Her lids were drawn, as if she were having difficulty keeping them open.

He knew he should press the call button, but after that there would be little time to spend with his Heidi. Nonetheless, he pressed the button before performing his own close scrutiny of her current condition.

"Hospital?" she asked.

"Yes, baby. Do you know why?"

She knitted her forehead as Euel considered her natural beauty amid his unspeakable joy. Heidi was awake! That in itself was a miracle.

"An accident," she managed. "I feel weak."

He nodded at her, and then cringed as one of the nurses sailed into the room. She looked instantly dismantled when she saw that Heidi was awake and immediately leaned out the door to call for more help.

A team of doctors shortly appeared with at least half a dozen nurses - all of them dressed in white.

Euel was directly ordered from the room so that Heidi could be examined.

"Euel stays," Heidi insisted.

The doctors had shared looks with one another, two suggesting that Euel should leave, that staying was against hospital policy. But Doctor Summers strongly disagreed and suggested to Euel that he stand to one side of the room as they conducted their examination.
