Merry Christmas, Mary©

Free Online Short Love Story

Written by American Author Sky Taylor

Four grown men wearing Santa hats and Bermuda shorts, sitting around the swimming pool drinking light beer on an extremely warm Thanksgiving Day  sent Joe spiraling out of the Land of Reality. What were his best friends thinking?

Obviously - they had to be the top three idiots in the world, spending quality  time with him rather than with their own wives. Very beautiful wives at that.

What was he? Some sort of charity case, just because he didn‘t have a girl? Oh - the giving season…

Or, was it something more? A developing trend that had slowly been building over the past few months? In retrospect….yes indeed, these best friends of his had been spending more and more time at his pad, and less and less time with their wives and family, he silently decided as he attempted to make his way back to the Land of Reality.

The football game had just ended, Joe’s team losing by a measly point. What a way to spend Thanksgiving day - with a losing team and three of his friends who happened to be the world’s biggest losers as well.

Then again, he wasn’t what one would call a winner himself, he paused to remind himself although his love life certainly paled in comparison to his friends.

Take Jeff - three kids and one marriage. Oddly enough his wife wasn’t the kid’s mother but one would assume such if they didn’t know better. Louise loved those kids more than their own father. And while Jeff was away playing for the day, Louise was at home preparing a family-style Thanksgiving day meal with all the trimmings. What a louse!

Paul. Just what had this scoundrel done to deserve Polly? If ever there lived a Miss Goody 2 Shoes - it had to be Polly. Even at this late hour of the evening she was still stationed at the homeless shelter making the day a bit brighter for those in need. Why he’d give his two front teeth to be married to a woman half as wonderful as Polly.

Andy. While he was living-it-up - enjoying the day with friends, his wife Jody was stationed at her family’s house. Andy didn’t get along with Jody’s family. Andy liked motorcycles; his father in law liked cows and never the two should meet.

So here he sat with these three undeserving studs - a beer lodged in two of their hands - one of them the designated driver, their backs at rest on the comfortable outdoor loungers - soaking up the rather warm rays of the Texas sun on this Thanksgiving day.

These three worms had a lot to be thankful for and as the time continued to sluggishly move along, Joe was currently at his rope’s end. Blame it on his team losing, blame it on the ungodly heat, or blame it on the fact that he was womanless - he was fed-up. In fact, the woman of his dreams always turned out to be a nightmare.

"Okay - party’s over guys," he suddenly announced, crushing his beer can and tossing it into a nearby container.

Wouldn’t do for it to end up in the flower beds. Heaven knew just how many hours his gardener Frank had put in on these gardens. Well, at least they were nice to look at - particularly the pansies Frank had planted for the autumn arrangement.

"What’d you mean party’s over?" Jeff protested, just before delivering a rather loud burp.

"Yeah - just what do you mean?" Andy wanted to know, his handsome face looking pinched and obviously displeased. "We’ve only had one beer-"

"Andy, one is enough. Wouldn’t be good to end up going home in a taxi on Thanksgiving day," Joe tried to reason, wondering if the moron realized just how beautiful his wife was. "Jody-"

"Jody’s still at her folk’s house shooting the bull. Probably literally," Andy snickered, rubbing the top of his hand over his mouth.

He was almost knocked out of his chair as Paul reached over and delivered a rather hearty slap to Andy’s back.

"At least you’re keeping your spirits up," Paul teased, holding up his beer and making a toast in the air.

"Andy - if you had half a brain, you’d be with her today - family or not," Joe bit out, unable to hold his tongue a moment longer.

"Now wait a minute, hoss," Jeff interceded, pointing an index finger at Joe. "Who died and made you boss?"

"Jeff, you’re rhyming," Joe needled, attaching a sardonic twist to his handsome lips. "And you’re not to be excused," he continued. "Louise is one of the finest women I know, yet you treat her like she’s nothing special."

"Women are a dime a dozen, Joe," he spat back. "This is a man’s world."

"Yeah - and you’ve went out of your way to ensure that it’s been populated," Joe tossed back, rubbing his temple with a free hand. Where did this headache spring from?

With a reckless abandoned he continued to maul Jeff, "Three kids - three different mothers, yet Louise loves them like her own. Those kids are your responsibility, Jeff and if I were you I wouldn’t be feeling so high and mighty right now."

"Joe, please - let’s not get down in the dirt - not on Thanksgiving Day, man," Paul tried to reason but Joe immediately turned on him.

"You’re not excluded from the rat pack, Paul. If you had any brains about you, you’d be helping Polly at the shelter today. If Polly were mine, I’d be an idiot to choose the company of three losers over hers."

Andy tossed back his dark head and delivered a deep laugh. "So that’s it. You’re jealous."

"No, I’m not jealous," Joe informed, still irritated. "You guys just don’t realize what you have, that’s all. And I’m tired of being the haven - the sanctuary. I have a gut feeling that if things continue to progress in this mode, by next year at this time - you’ll all be single men like me."

Jeff, Paul and Andy relaxed against their loungers, Andy looking the most thoughtful of the three.

He told Joe, "You just don’t know what it feels like - being tied down. If you were in our shoes, you’d understand."

"Not if I had a woman half as special as the three of you have," Joe assured, not wishing for his private life to be discussed. Then again, he was responsible for opening the can of worms.

"Hey Jeff, do you remember Mary Cooper?" Paul asked.

"Hum…..the girl that opened the catering service? The girl that your wives all apparently adore?"

"One and the same," Paul answered. "You think that she’d be deserving of Joe?" he asked Andy and Jeff, a mischievous twinkle in his dark eyes.
