Lariat, a Western Romance

"Let go of me - you big brute!" Diandra protested, digging her boot heels in the dusty earth which only served to create a mild dust storm.

Coughing, he continued to drag her along the way, gleaning a bit of satisfaction along the way as he found it pleasing to force her to do something that she didn't want to do.  And it was for her own good!  If not, then there wouldn't have been one ounce of satisfaction.

When they arrived at the metal watering trough, he spun her from him and when she had barely collected her senses, he grabbed her hand and plunged it into the watering trough.

Diandra squealed, quickly removing her hand as she stuttered, "The-the water - it's hot."

"Aye, and by the time that the sun rears her ugly face past zenith, it will damned-well reach a scalding point," he assured, his lips twisting in satisfaction.

She blinked her eyes in a stupor, suddenly ripped with concern for the cattle.  "I-I hadn't realized.  The poor things - nothing but hot water to fill up on.  These metal holding tanks are dotted all over the ranch."

"Probably what's wrong with your crazed-looking horse, too," Bodey commented, tilting his straw hat back to allow some of the heat to escape. It seemed hotter here than in Australia. Then again, Diandra made him hot in more ways than one.  He continued to reflect, "Probably burned his nostrils when he went to take a drink."

Before she had time to comment, he continued, "I highly recommend concrete tanks or wooden tar-lined troughs."

Diandra gazed up into his stern-looking face, then managed, "I must say that I tend to agree with your recommendation, although I'm finding this situation quite difficult."  Nodding towards the frozen Featherloom, she added, "But I assure you that my horse isn't afflicted with-"

"He's afflicted alright," he drawled, Diandra tightening her lips and deciding not to expound on her explanation.  There were two types of people in this world; those that thought they knew it all and those that truly knew it all.  Bodey was the first - a Mister Know-It-All.
