Kumquats Are People Too, a Free Online Love Story by Sky Taylor - Page 2
Dinah tucked ChiChi under one arm, preparing to climb back into the car. Couldn’t wait to switch on the air-conditioner. It was blazing hot for an early June day - at least one-hundred and five. Due to the high levels of humidity, it felt even hotter than the actual temperature. One thing was certain - the vegetation in the area wouldn’t last an extended period if the heat wave continued. Sticking the key into the ignition she screamed as the ancient old codger appeared in front of her car but before she had time to react, he was beside her, jabbering his fool head off - but she wasn’t able to understand a single thing he said. His tongue was practically glued to the roof of his mouth. She screamed again as he reached far into the car and snatched ChiChi’s water bottle from the passenger seat and began drinking from it as if there were no tomorrow. Dinah exited the car in a huff, ChiChi jumping onto her left shoulder, looking like some parrot gone amuck. “That’s ChiChi’s water! Give that back!” she told him, reaching out and trying to snare the bottle from the old man, but he held her off almost effortlessly with one free hand as he continued to guzzle-down the life-saving liquid. And once he’d had his fill, he eyed her and asked, “ChiChi?” “Yes! My baby Chihuahua,” she tossed out nodding to her shoulder, not sure if she should be angry or frightened. Although the old man was dirty and had exhibited the strength of an ox, he didn’t look threatening. That is, scents aside. “Chi wah?” “Wah,” she finished, her thoughts continuing to spiral out of control. To his doubled brow, she enhanced, “My baby doggie.” Pax snarled up his nose, flaring his nostrils in the process. “You mean…..I just drank out of its water bottle?” he asked, pointing to a hassling ChiChi.
