Hunger Moon, a Short Love Story - Page 1
A hunger moon hung high in the sky on this cold, February evening as the stagecoach arrived in the booming town of Broken Stick, albeit in a crippled condition.
One of the lead horses had experienced a stone bruise about a mile back, necessitating the stopover until the morning hour when Doctor Sierra Sonora would continue her journey to the town of Seven Hills - a short two hours ride away.
Seven Hills was more on the order of a small village rather than a town. However, given time Seven Hills and Broken Stick would bleed and blend together as the great state of Texas was quickly becoming the pride of the west - filling with people migrating from the congested cities which skirted the eastern half of the country.
Texas, 'the land of opportunity', had its draws - the milder winters, the sunny days and rich soil for planting sustainable crops.
The drawbacks included excruciatingly hot days during late spring, summer, and early fall months, a lack of water in drought-stricken areas, isolation due to low population in many areas, and a shortage of businesses and doctors - which had played a part in Sierra's decision to relocate.
Sierra knew that her two dear aunts who were expecting her arrival would no-doubt be wreathing with worry, so a visit to the telegraph office was in order before settling in at the local hotel.
