Suddenly, she was knocked off balance and when she steadied herself against the lamp post she heard a weak voice say, "I'm sorry, Miss. I didn't see you. Feeding the birds, you see."

He was an elderly man and the wrinkled face beamed a friendly smile at her. His hands were clamped firmly around a brown bag which was spilling over with birdseed. He began pitching out the seed to a group of mulled pigeons.

"Feed them everyday. The winter months are especially hard on the little fellows. Summer's a bit kinder. Beautiful, aren't they?" he asked, offering the bag to her.

Lace smiled at him and extracted a handful of grain and began casting it out to the hungry birds. "Yes, they are."

A few minutes later he had her laughing, Lace glad to have her mind away from the terrible scene of Mak and the red-haired woman.
