Dale was meandering toward the men, not very happy with Mak's instructions. Mak neared her, jerked off the Stetson and tossed it to him.

"Take this with you, Houston," he told him as Dale barely managed to catch his expensive hat. Then to Cookie, "Why didn't you find her a hat?"

Cookie commenced to cursing, his mouth a mumbled hole, Lace unable to make out most of what he was saying. Something about Herefords and brainless females.

To her confused state Mak leaned and confided, "One of Elsie Hereford's conquests."

"Cookie?"

"Cookie," he assured with a smirk.

She was digesting the information as Cookie stomped away to his wagon and began loading up the leftovers. He had sent her a hostile glance and she felt terrible, even though she hadn't done anything. It was tortoise britches' fault!
