Where the Four Winds Meet, a Humorous Western Super Romance - Page 94
There
was a note propped up on the kitchen countertop. Curiously, she picked it
up, carefully avoiding the smears of mustard and catsup blotches, then read,
"Gone to the hills to search for Peppergut. See ya later.
Bean."
For
the first time in a long while she had the place to herself - and she welcomed
the silence.
First,
she took a long bubble bath then dressed in a silver jumpsuit.
Bean
had yet to return; Sonny, too. Perhaps he had joined his mother,
returning with her to Lubbock she wistfully considered.
A quick call to the hospital confirmed that English was resting peacefully and
all was well. And then she heard the van and peeking out the window, she

Sonny
ambled into the house, his face looking serious and tense. It was the
first time that she could actually remember being frightened of him.
He
settled into the sofa and she eased into the large stuffed chair.
"Did-did
you get your mother off?" she managed, feeling a bit like the groping
Hiram by the pond this morning. Had it only been this morning?
"She'll
be on the first available afternoon flight tomorrow, after she gets her mouth
repaired. I got her a room in Dalton and she can taxi into the big city.
But enough about Mother. We both know what I want to talk about, Farrell,"
he told her, his eyes soaring over her uncomfortable looking face.
"Sonny.
Perhaps you best go stay with her tonight - make sure that she gets to
that dentist and on her flight-"
"Are
you having an affair with him?"
“What!”
“The
cowboy. Are you having an affair with him?”
