"You're living with three males at a secluded ranch, Ms. Connors. Surely you realize that's reason enough to start tongues wagging in this small town."

"Why-why those silly old hens," she eased out under her breath, the situation dawning over her.s

She reeled as Leif hinted, "Judging from your expression.....and comments, I am assuming that you haven't transformed Sleepy Meadows into Happy Valley?"

"You are way out of line, Mr. Nighthorse!" she snapped, his insinuation, ridiculous. "Why, I have known English, Bean and Peppy for years now."

"Ms. Connors," he drawled in an easy, superior-like tone, "I have twenty-five men to oversee at Crooked River. The handful of available women in the area look like mud fences - none can match your beauty."

Farrell eyed him cautiously, not sure if Leif had handed her a compliment or a fake raisin which prompted her to ask, "Just what are you getting at?"

"Don't be surprised if you find a few of my cowboys drifting towards your front door.  It doesn't take that long for word to circle in Dalton."

"Why - that's ridiculous," she torched.  "Then again, your cowboys seem awfully dense - as if they might be fertile seed for town gossip."

"Hold on-"

"So let them just try to knock at my front door.  They're nothing that my men can't handle-"

"Your men?" Leif mocked, tilting the Stetson back another notch on the dark, damp head.

Farrell tensed, trying to concentrate on the stack of corn behind him but her face flew instantly back to him as he clipped out, "Two foreigners and a greenhorn."

It was the second time that he had insulted the integrity of her men and she glared hostilely at him.

"Bean isn't a greenhorn," she managed in defense, wisely choosing to omit English and Peppy.
