Destination Destiny, a Free Online Love Story by Sky Taylor - Page 2

In hindsight, perhaps she should have opted for a smarter exit plan. At this moment, her resources included a purse full of loose change, a tent, a few blankets, a sack of peanut butter sandwiches, two suitcases containing the minimal of clothing, and the William’s old clunker which suddenly decided that another cough-and-lunge was in order.

The boys had been allowed to hold onto what little toys they had; basically a few tiny cars with broken wheels and two ragged teddy bears that had served their purpose years ago.

If only Kitty had known that things had been this bad. At least her ‘nowhere’ job in the big city had allowed her to purchase a reliable car, the camera gear and provide the basic necessities of life.

If only she had been able to visit her sister and brother-in-law over these past five years. And at this point, her life had been filled with far too many ‘if only’s’. Then again, when one lived in Maine, it wasn’t cheap visiting relatives who resided deep in the heart of Texas.

But yes - possessions aside, Nan and Jim were very good parents, yet his job opportunities had been limited in their small hometown. Working full-time as a dishwasher at the local diner had been barely enough to put food on the table and pay rent. Kitty had paid over a thousand dollars - just in delinquent utility bills to wrap-up the outstanding details of the estate.

At least her attorney had been thorough, obtaining permanent guardianship of the boys for Kitty in record time. The downside was that by the end of the process, her funds and financial resources had been totally depleted and she was heavily in debt.

The swift migration was also based on the children’s education. What better time to change schools than at the onset of the holiday break? Indeed, it was time to get her game on where the boys’ welfare was concerned. If the courts knew of her current situation, she feared they might take them from her. That just couldn’t happen. What she needed, was a miracle.

Perhaps she should seek aid from the state, but that in itself could be tricky. What if they decided she was incapable of caring for the boys? If they were taken from her….she just couldn’t handle anymore. Her plate was far too full and was cracking down the middle.

Her brown eyes widened as the car emitted a loud squeal, pulling to one side of the road, smoke spiraling from the hood as Kitty managed to steer them to safety.

“Aunt Kitty, what’s wrong with Old Betsy?“ eight year old Danny asked, his eyes wide and appearing frightened to Kitty’s swift evaluation, her focus on the sick car as well as a million worries and concerns.

The looming storm in itself was frightening, the wind shaking the car to and fro, adding to her frustrations. And the sky was so gray - so empty looking.
