Destination Destiny
a Free Online Love Story by Sky Taylor - Page 1

Ben Danner eyed the ominous clouds moving in from the north. No doubt, they were in for some strong winds and a gully-washer. He just hoped he made it home before the bad stuff hit. Only ten more miles…

Kitty Dalworth nudged the ancient clunker along, secretly coaxing it to ‘be good‘. But being seventeen years old and having more than 250,000 miles clocked on the engine, she shouldn’t be expecting much. Just seven more miles to town.

“Come on, old girl - you can make it!” she silently encouraged, as if the auto had ears.

Her five nephews were being angels, each quite tired from the day’s journey, and mentally exhausted from the events of the past six months. Losing their parents at such a young age was traumatic and Kitty was doing her best, based on her available resources.

She had sold all her personal belongings, including her beloved camera gear and her personal car in order to pay for the two funerals and meet the impending financial obligations surrounding the deaths of her only sibling - her beloved sister, and her brother-in-law.

How she missed both Nan and Jim - the last remnants of a family outside of her five nephews. And with their passing, her own life had completely changed…

The impending holidays suddenly sprung to her whirling thoughts. Three weeks until Christmas, and she had no idea if she would be able to secure a job and obtain lodging for the six of them, much less have money for gifts. She was already in debt up to her yea-hoo.

The town where they had lived had been so small with few decent places to work. After the accident, she had been forced to abandon her personal photography career in Maine which had been locked inside a struggling phase, relocating to Texas to assume guardianship of the children. With time and luck she knew her photography career would have blossomed. So close….yet not close enough. And it would have been insanity attempting to relocate the children from Texas to Maine.

After the relocation, for a time she worked for Jim’s former boss at the local diner. But with six mouths to feed, her budget required more than a minimum paying job. She knew she could do much better in a larger town, although uprooting the boys from everything they had known in life had factored into the equation - the decision to leave not taken lightly by Kitty. Even so, it was a less aggressive option than relocating to another state.

In the end she had run out of options, so they had gathered up what little they owned and had left for brighter horizons.
