Unlike before, Josie was vividly aware of everything going on about her - Diamond's illustrious profanity, the scampering of his men as he directed them to the scene, Kent's delirious outbursts declaring 'Pooky's impending death', and finally Diamond's muffled wails as Roberto kindly obliged removing the spiny thorns from his backside.

He sighed, then continued, "Perhaps your death would be a gift from God. I understand now why Simon was so determined to separate you from Martel. You'd be better off - even with a desperado like me, than him."

Josie pretended to come to life, Diamond's comments disturbing her for some reason. She saw his face relax and then he immediately ordered Roberto to bring her some food.

"Feeling better?" he asked and she nodded cautiously, not trusting her tongue for the moment.
