Two weeks passed, fourteen torturous days of hell with the devil himself. Since that morning by the campfire, Josie had resigned herself to silence, only speaking with Roberto and Fernando. Her daylight hours were filled with cooking, the nights by the campfire looking up at the dazzling stars embedded in the Mexican sky. Diamond was never more than a few heartbeats away. His drinking had ceased and it seemed that he had accepted her code of silence most willingly. For hours through the dusky nights she could feel his dark eyes on her as he sifted through his brooding thoughts. Therefore, she was stunned on this particular night when he spoke to her in what she sensed as an earnest, sincere tone. "Josie, I don't know what distresses me more. Your sharp shredding tongue, or your silence." He sighed deeply, shifting on his bedroll to lay on his corded stomach as he continued to speak with her. "You've lost a lot of weight and are beginning to look as dead as you sound." She bristled at his comment but was mellowed when he continued with, "Our work is almost complete. If that boyfriend of yours doesn't surface soon, I'll be taking you with me back to the states to find Simon. I don't know what possessed him to do this thing, but he was wrong. Now sleep, Josie, and dream good thoughts. Whatever you think of me, rest assured that I will let no harm befall you." His kind words were like a salve to her wounded spirit. Her silence had broken him - showing him the errors of his ways. However, it was a bit late in coming! Too late! Too late and too little. Whatever he thought, Kent would soon be riding in on the scene. And Diamond would be the unforgiven!
