Hot tears sprung to her eyes and she turned from him, not allowing him to see the hurt that had surfaced from within her.   She'd never hated him more than at this moment. She walked in the distance, Diamond calling after her. But she refused to answer. The last thing she needed was more of his deranged comments.

The following day was hotter than the day before. So sultry, that Josie found it hard to draw a breath. Then too, crying all night hadn't helped matters.

It was almost noon when she noticed an apparition approaching on the horizon in the distance. Or....Simon? My God, could it be?

Her heart jumped into her throat as she grabbed the binoculars from her working station and confirmed her sighting. It was Simon, coming to rescue her!  With each approaching step, her excitement grew. She could almost hear the pounding lyrics of a spaghetti western droning in the valley around her!

Amid her short lived joy a deep sadness settled in, twisting at her heart. Not over Simon's abandonment of her or of Kent's unrequited love. It lay with Diamond and his open rejection of her. Diamond Faregate - her tormentor, enemy, unrighteous pig of a man who had turned Kent against her. True, a rendezvous with Kent through life quivered with disaster. But Diamond had no right to smash her once-perfect dream. Undeserving bandicoot! She'd show him - she'd show them all!

Josie made hot tracks for Diamond's survival gear - whiskey and smokes. Getting even would be delicious - her final triumph! Poor Diamond...and poor Kent....and poor Simon, her deceitful brother. They wouldn't know what had hit them until it was over!

Falling on his bedroll she opened the whiskey and drew off a few slugs, detesting the taste but welcoming its courage. Lighting the smoking stick was a bit more tricky but she managed just as Simon bobbed into camp on the burro.
