Josie revolved to face him and spat out, "Kent, please - just give it a rest, okay?"

Kent childishly kicked dirt at her and said, "No! You can't boss me anymore, Josie! After this is over, I'll have more money than you. Then we will see who's who!"

Josie knotted her brows and grated, "Diamond, you're responsible for creating this-this monster." Then to Kent, "I don't even know you anymore. You've transformed into this - this giant mockingbird since you arrived -"

Kent told her, "After we're married-"

"There will not be a marriage, Kent," she quickly corrected.

Kent's chest puffed and swelled for what seemed like an eternity then finally, he accused, "That's your fault, Josie! Diamond explained how you'd fallen in love with him-"

"What!"

"That there wouldn't be a marriage," Kent continued to her shocked, pale-looking face. "I was just wondering how long you'd wait before telling me. It's like Diamond said, a man's gotta look out after his own self."

At that, he tramped into the distance toward the sound of Roberto's haunting guitar.

For a few moments Josie was dumbstruck. Recovering swiftly, she turned on Diamond who still lay sprawled in a comfortable position.

"Diamond! Just what lies did you tell to Kent? He-he's crushed."

"He's free," Diamond lazily commented. "He's happy, I'm happy, all God's children are happy."

"Well, I'm not happy," Josie informed, her eyes going from his smug looking face to the purple horizon in the distance.

Diamond shrugged.  "Josie, you'll never be happy.  At least your cascade of calamity is almost to an end as far as I'm concerned. Soon, we'll all be free."
