He took the food from Roberto and told her, "I want you to eat, Josie. The heat, combined with your lack of appetite, is not being considerate to you."

She shook her head and told him, "No, I-I want to go home."

Diamond tossed out a dissatisfied curse and told her, "You will. In a few more days - no more than a week. At least you have a friend in the camp now. Martel seems quite besotted with you."

Josie accepted defeat - as well as the food from Diamond. If she were going to make it out of here alive, she would need all the strength she could muster.

"Well, you'll be glad to know that Simon's plan worked. You were both right about Kent. He's-well, he is not the man for me."

Diamond's words flooded back to her mind...."And neither am I."

Why should these thoughts occur to her? Silly, silly thoughts at that. She wouldn't want Diamond even if he wanted her.

His voice drew her attention and she glanced up at him. "Does this mean that the wedding is off?"

She nodded and mocked, "The wedding is off. Kent's off - nothing matters anymore. I just want to go home."

Diamond nodded then leaned back to assess her. "Don't feel so intimidated, Josie."

He pulled a leather pouch from his dusty jeans and continued, "It's not entirely Martel's fault." He dumped a handful of shiny diamonds from the pouch into his calloused hand.  The glittering prisms almost blinded her against the foil of the hot Mexican sun. "Greed usually takes top priority with most men, even over a beautiful woman such as yourself. So don't take it personally. You see, Martel's not any different than most men."
